Neck Pain Q & A

What is neck pain?

Neck pain is discomfort, mild or severe, that occurs or originates in your cervical spine. Your cervical spine is the portion of your spine in your neck, which connects your head to your torso.

Neck pain often comes with neck stiffness, and it’s typically a short-term issue that goes away on its own. However, long-lasting neck pain may come from an underlying injury or degenerative condition that requires more than home care.

At Midwest Sports and Interventional Spine, Dr. Philip explores the possible causes of your neck pain and can make a diagnosis after a physical exam and possible imaging tests. You should consider booking an appointment if your neck pain and stiffness don’t go away within a few days of their onset, despite your efforts with at-home care.

What causes neck pain?

Neck pain or stiffness often happens after you jerk your neck rapidly during exercise, upon impact in a sport or accident, or after sleeping in an unusual position. Specific injuries and conditions that cause pain or stiffness in the neck include:

  • Cervical degenerative disc disease

  • Cervical herniated disc

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Spondylolisthesis

  • Muscle or tendon strains

  • Ligament sprains

  • Cervical vertebral fractures

There are a few risk factors that put you at a higher likelihood of experiencing neck pain than the general population. You’re more likely to experience neck pain if you carry poor posture, work in a labor-intensive field, or smoke.

What are my neck pain treatment options?

Midwest Sports and Interventional Spine offers top-tier options for in-office neck pain relief. Alongside a comprehensive treatment plan with physical therapy and activity modification, Dr. Philip can treat your neck pain with:

Cervical steroid injections

Cervical steroid injections go into the epidural space and can alleviate inflammation in the region. This takes compression off of specific nerves to relieve your neck pain for several weeks or months.

Cervical radiofrequency ablation

Cervical radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive, X-ray-guided treatment that relieves neck pain by preventing pain signals from aggravated nerves. Radiofrequency energy heats and kills targeted nerve tissue.

Medication management

Dr. Philip may prescribe or recommend pain medication to help relieve inflammation and ease your neck pain. He evaluates your progress with medications and can adjust the dosages if necessary.

Intense neck pain or any neck pain lasting longer than a week can quickly become a major inconvenience for you. To explore non-surgical and minimally invasive neck pain treatments, call Midwest Sports and Interventional Spine or request an appointment online today.
